Nation of Islam allegedly brainwashing Michael Jackson
Independent | Submitted by: Liddell
"The saga surrounding Michael Jackson took a new twist yesterday amid reports that a black separatist group was taking over his affairs and keeping him 'semi-captive.' The claims were made as it emerged that Jackson's official spokesman Stuart Backerman had parted company with the star's team, citing 'strategic differences' over the handling of child abuse allegations against the pop star... A senior Jackson employee told The New York Times that the Nation of Islam had 'taken over completely and are in full and total charge' of the pop star's affairs. Another source added: 'These people are basically brainwashing him. Everyone is scared of them. They pretty much keep Michael semi-captive.'"

Kissinger considered seizing Arab petroleum
Washington Post | Submitted by: optional
"The United States gave serious consideration to sending airborne troops to seize oil fields in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi during the 1973 Arab oil embargo, according to a top-secret British intelligence memorandum... It cites a warning from Defense Secretary James R. Schlesinger to the British ambassador in Washington, Lord Cromer, that the United States would not tolerate threats from 'under-developed, under-populated' countries and that 'it was no longer obvious to him that the United States could not use force.' ... The document, dated Dec. 13, 1973... goes on to discuss the likely scenario for an American invasion, how Britain could assist the United States and how Arab nations and the Soviet Union were likely to respond.... 'The greatest risk of such confrontation in the Gulf would probably arise in Kuwait where the Iraqis, with Soviet backing, might be tempted to intervene,' it says, presaging Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's 1990 invasion of Kuwait."

Khmer Rouge leaders one step closer to war crimes tribunal
New Straits Times | Submitted by: When you pry it from my dead, cold hand.
"A former Khmer Rouge leader expected to face a U.N. tribunal acknowledged Tuesday there is 'no more doubt left' that his regime committed genocide, the first admission of the communist group's collective guilt. Khieu Samphan's surprising statement in an interview with The Associated Press is a major step in the long overdue effort to bring to justice those responsible for the deaths of 1.7 million Cambodians during the ultra-leftist group's 1975-79 rule. Many of the victims were executed; the rest died of starvation, disease and overwork in the Khmer Rouge's attempt to create an agrarian utopia. Now, with an agreement on a tribunal earlier this month between U.N. and Cambodian officials, ex-Khmer Rouge leaders should soon face charges for the first time."

Convoy truckers striking back in iraq
armytimes.com | Submitted by: wingnut
"The truckers have developed defensive driving techniques, like keeping to the center lane and blocking civilian cars from entering the convoy. They watch for suspicious bomb-disguising debris at the roadside. They’re even retrofitting trucks with steel plates and mounted guns that look like something out of Mad Max, the 1979 cult movie about warring gangs who drive customized armored cars... 'We tell them "Be the wolf out on the road, not the sheep,"' said Brig. Gen. Vincent E. Boles, the 3rd Coscom’s commander. 'We want our soldiers to look everybody in the eye and let them know that if they take action against us, they’re going to pay a high price.'"

Hawaiians insulted by derogatory radio banter
Honolulu Advertiser | Submitted by: noname
"On Sunday night, syndicated radio show Loveline, aired locally on KPOI 97.5, contained the following interchange between hosts Dr. Drew Pinsky, a medical doctor, and Adam Carolla, a comic and former host of Comedy Central's The Man Show: ...
Adam Carolla: They're retarded people. They stay on the island. They're in-bred, obviously. They're the dumbest people we have.
Dr. Drew: I have met some smart South Pacific people. Not who lived there.
Adam Carolla: People are smart enough to move. Everyone close your eyes and think of all the amazing contributions the Hawaiian scientific community has made over the years. (Long pause) Uh ... They're stupid people.
Dr. Drew: All right. Let's hear from them. Let's hear what they have to say. It'd be interesting to hear what they have to say.
Adam Carolla: What, the Hawaiians? First off, they don't know how to dial the phone. They can't call. They don't know what they're doing. They have big calves. That's all. They're stupid people."
