Northern Ireland cops protected serial killers
Belfast Telegraph | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Police in Northern Ireland have used 'serial killers' as informants and shielded them from prosecution, an ex-RUC detective has alleged. Johnston Brown, a retired CID sergeant, also claimed more could have been done to bring a feared north Belfast UVF squad to justice. The ex-officer has been a vociferous critic of past practices of Special Branch, the controversial police intelligence wing... He states in the interview that police informants went outside official parameters on some occasions. 'Including murder? Yes they did. Were they protected by the highest authority? Yes, they were.'"

Richard Perle secretly owned by Boeing
Financial Times | Submitted by: wingnut
"Richard Perle, a prominent Pentagon adviser, lobbied on behalf of Boeing's bid for a controversial $18bn government contract a year after the aerospace company made a $20m investment in the venture capital fund he runs. Mr Perle, a former Reagan-era assistant defence secretary, is considered one of the most influential civilian members of Washington's defence establishment... In August, Mr Perle co-authored an Op-Ed piece in the Wall Street Journal arguing in favour of a deal in which the Air Force would lease 100 767 aircraft refuelling tankers from Boeing... Mr Perle did not disclose that Boeing had committed to invest $20m in his venture capital fund, Trireme Partners, in mid-2002. The investment marked one of the largest early stakes taken in the fund by a corporate partner... Internal Boeing e-mails portray a lobbying campaign the company undertook to have 'friends on the Hill' and 'think tanks' drum up support for the deal."

Mom receives 17 years for raping daughter
iAfrica | Submitted by: Janey G.
"The mother was found guilty of being an accessory to rape because she had done nothing to protect her child, even when the child begged her to do something. The child's stepfather is presently serving a life term for repeatedly raping the girl. The mother testified that she had held onto her daughter's leg while her husband raped the child because the child was trembling. She had told the girl that it was 'not so bad and that she (the mother) had also been raped as a child.' According to a report by a social worker, the mother had given in to her husband's fantasies of taking the girl's virginity after months of nagging and threats." [Never underestimate the power of nagging.]

Decapitators taken into custody
Dayton Daily News | Submitted by: Col. Klink
"After using a steak knife to remove the head from a corpse in a Preble County mausoleum, John P. Suicide bomber strikes Russian commuter train
Washington Post | Submitted by: uscfiend
"A powerful explosion ripped through an electric commuter train in southern Russia on Friday morning, killing at least 41 people and injuring at least 155. Authorities called it a 'terrorist' act by a suicide bomber, an unidentified man who reportedly detonated a shrapnel-filled bomb aboard the train... The crowded rush-hour train had just pulled out from a station in the town of Yessentuki in the Stavropol region not far from Chechnya when its second car suddenly shattered in the blast, sending some passengers flying through the air and spraying metal shards through scores of Russians heading to work... Female suicide bombers, often called 'black widows' by the Russian tabloid press, have been responsible for many of the terrorist attacks over the last year."

Woman bursts into flames at gas pump
Atlanta Journal-Constitution | Submitted by: optional
"A hair stylist was pumping gas into her car when her hair burst into flames... The fire was probably caused by static electricity from Marshall's hair rubbing against her clothes, said her husband, Camilla firefighter Lt. Bill Marshall. Norwegians choosing suicide by big rig
Aftenposten | Submitted by: kintaro
"11 out of 26 Norwegian traffic accidents involving head-on collisions between cars and large freight trucks are suicides. Truck drivers believe the real numbers are even higher and Norway's Minister of Transport and Communication has called an emergency meeting... Professional truckers said the collisions often leave drivers with psychological problems, with many haunted by the incidents. 'For truckers it is a macabre sight when suicidal types wave and smile as they drive into the front of a rig,' said Alf Ragnar Karlsen of the Norwegian Transport Worker Union."

Researchers faked AIDS prevention data
Washington Times | Submitted by: Crazy Quagga
"Lajuane Woodard, Sheila Blackwell and Khalilah Creek were employed by the University of Maryland at Baltimore's department of pediatrics as researchers on the study, funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The three admitted they made up interviews with teenagers, which they had claimed took place from May to August 2001, for the study on preventing the transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. The fabrication was first reported in the journal Research USA... The study's objective was to determine whether enhancing an existing AIDS prevention program called Focus on Kids by adding 'parental monitoring' would have an effect on the children involved."

Student expelled for having Advil
Shreveport Times | Submitted by: uucp
"A student expelled from Parkway High for a year for having Advil, an over-the-counter pain reliever, will not be allowed to return to the school. Kelly Herpin and daughter Amanda Stiles, a sophomore, appealed the one-year expulsion to a Bossier Parish School Board committee Thursday night, spending about 10 minutes with the board's administrative committee behind closed doors. The committee and the full board voted unanimously to uphold an administrative decision that Stiles be expelled to the alternative school... Superintendent Ken Kruithof said after the board meeting that the school system is following a state law that requires a one-year expulsion and being consistent in the system's 'zero-tolerance' policy. But another school official said earlier Thursday that having medication on campus doesn't automatically lead to a one-year expulsion." [What a great lesson for your pupils: Rules are arbitrary, and adults are never obliged to apply common sense. Good job, morons.]

Deputies cover up boss's kid's drug bust
Orange County Weekly | Submitted by: juanholmes
"A bombshell audio recording reveals police suppressed evidence that Assistant Sheriff Don Haidl's teenage son was caught smoking marijuana while awaiting trial on charges he participated in a 2002 videotaped gang rape of an unconscious 16-year-old girl. Official records show that Assistant Sheriff George Jaramillo secretly ordered Sgt. Richard Downing to bury evidence of Gregory Scott Haidl's involvement in an Oct. 26 San Clemente drug bust. Records also prove that Sheriff's Lt. William J. Hunt - chief of police services in San Clemente, where the sheriff has jurisdiction - released Haidl without arrest and chauffeured him home... Haidl is awaiting a March trial on the rape charges. Under terms of his $100,000 bail, a drug arrest would have landed the 18-year-old in jail immediately."

Man facing life sentence denied 6th Amendment
Orange County Weekly | Submitted by: juanholmes
"Gustavo Orejel, a 22-year-old Santa Ana resident with no record of violent crime, faces life in prison for allegedly shooting a gun at a car full of gang members who had just fired several bullets at his house. No victims were ever identified in the shooting and Santa Ana police uncovered no physical evidence tying Orejel to the crime. But because Orejel stands accused of belonging to a gang, prosecutors aren't even required to reveal the identity of the two witnesses they say have fingered Orejel in the shooting." [In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.]

Dale Earnhardt law dicking over patriotic websites
Technician Online | Submitted by: Soylent
"The latest case comes from Florida, where the University of Florida's student newspaper, The Alligator, sued for the right to print NASCAR racer Dale Earnhardt's autopsy photos. Earnhardt, a seven-time Winston Cup champion, died during the Daytona 500 on Feb. 18, 2001 when his car slammed into a wall. He died instantly of injuries to the head. There was a media frenzy to cover the event and anything connected with Earnhardt was fair game, even the autopsy photos. The State of Florida, however, disagreed and passed a law banning the press from seeing and printing autopsy photos. There is a $5,000 fine for the unauthorized copying and publication of autopsy photos. This law applies to Internet sites as well, to prevent sites like Rotten.com, which displays grotesque pictures, from picking them up and publishing them on the World Wide Web."
