White House leaks moon base proposal
Fox News | Submitted by: Jeff of the Mountain
"President Bush wants to send Americans back to the moon - and may leave a permanent presence there - in a bold new vision for space exploration, administration officials said yesterday... Bush's call for a return to space would give Americans something new to hope for - amid a period of permanent anxiety about terrorism. It would also help move NASA beyond last February's space shuttle Columbia disaster. Sources said the president may also give the go-ahead to pursue a manned trip to Mars - a long range goal."

The boner of Jesus adorned accused priest's church
Orange County Weekly | Submitted by: juanholmes
"Outside Saint Joseph's Church in Santa Ana, a two-story mural of Jesus greets commuters speeding west on Civic Center Drive... a red bulge suggests the Savior's scrotum, while a swath of pink appears to indicate the Holy Johnson... perhaps it is only coincidence that, until this summer, this same church was presided over by Father CÚsar Salazar, who is awaiting results of a federal investigation into charges he downloaded child pornography."

6-year-old confined to clothes dryer
Toronto Star | Submitted by: Lydia
"An Ottawa woman has been convicted of locking a 6-year-old girl in a clothes dryer, where the girl ate, slept, urinated and defecated, for weeks at a time. Ontario Court Judge James Fontana, who heard the case over 24 days spread over more than two years, convicted the 41-year-old woman of forcibly confining the girl in the dryer and failing to provide the necessities of life for a child. The girl was in the woman's care because the child's biological mother was unfit to handle the troublesome youngster. The girl is now back with her biological mother."

Child starved, beaten, killed
CNN | Submitted by: plick
"An 11-year-old girl's parents tied her up in the garage, starved the child and beat her with an umbrella until she died during the Thanksgiving holiday, police said. The sixth-grader tried to escape her home in Stockbridge just south of Atlanta, but she was only punished more severely - she was left without food, water, a bathroom or a bed, police said. The girl's father, 37-year-old Rodney Michael Reaves, and her stepmother, 38-year-old Charlott Lynett Reaves, were arrested Monday and charged with felony murder and cruelty to children. The girl, Joella Reaves, was beaten over her entire body with an umbrella and paddle for several days, according to the arrest warrant. Her cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma."

Cemeterians pay $100m to settle lawsuits
Guardian | Submitted by: Lydia
"The world's largest funeral company has agreed to pay $100m in damages for digging up bones from its graves and throwing them away to make room for more coffins. Service Corp International (SCI) was reported yesterday to have agreed the settlement in a series of lawsuits after accusations that its employees desecrated the graves at two Jewish cemeteries in Florida. Two years ago, it emerged that workers at the Florida cemeteries had been throwing bones from graves into nearby woods. They had also been burying bodies in the wrong plots and opening vaults so that more bodies could be buried and profits increased."

Lunatic bicycle shooter legally insane
Cleveland Plain Dealer | Submitted by: BLKhobb
"A Shaker Heights man who said he was acting under orders of God when he randomly shot white people from his bicycle last year was found not guilty by reason of insanity yesterday... When officers searched his home, they did not find a gun, but they discovered abundant circumstantial evidence: a poster of Osama bin Laden; books about making gun silencers; a T-shirt with the word 'God' written on it; a receipt for a .380-caliber gun, and reams of 'extremely inflammatory' writings in journals and e-mails that DeJarnette wrote and sent to himself. Many of the messages focused on DeJarnette's hatred of white people, whom he suspected of threatening his life... DeJarnette believed the messages from God were delivered via the media and recorded music."

NYU nixes in-classroom fucking
New York Times | Submitted by: plick
"In October, a film student at New York University pitched an idea for her video-making class: a four-minute portrayal of the contrast between unbridled human lust and banal everyday behavior. Her professor approved. The student, Paula Carmicino, found two actor friends willing to have sex on camera in front of the class. The other students expressed their support. But then the professor thought he should double-check with the administration, which immediately pulled the plug on the project."

NYPD cops still writing ridiculous tickets
New York Daily News | Submitted by: Juan Motaim
"Police wrote Queens hospital worker George Pulido a summons for making unreasonable noise because his son Christopher's Winnie the Pooh balloon popped on the street... [9-year-old] Chris was holding a party balloon on a string as the family walked home when it suddenly got away from him at Parsons Blvd. and 105th St., hit the sidewalk and popped. 'Three cops were at the curb in a car and one of them called me over and said he was giving me a ticket,' Pulido said. He said he asked the cop, 'Are you serious? You're gonna give me a ticket for balloon popping?' ... A rash of silly summonses made headlines earlier this year for transgressions such as using multiple subway seats or sitting on a milk crate on the sidewalk. A pregnant woman was even ticketed for resting on subway steps. Police brass have consistently denied there is a ticket quota." [Uh huh.]

Woman gets 10 years for burger rage incident
KPRC-TV 2 Houston | Submitted by: Chris B.
"Waynetta Nolan, 36, used her vehicle to run over Sherry Allen Jenkins, 43, a McDonald's manager, prosecutors said, because her drive-through order was wrong... Nolan was verbally abusive to employees of the restaurant in the 10400 block of Bissonnet on April 23. When Jenkins told her to not talk that way, she then went outside to write down Nolan's license number. Nolan hit her with her car... 'She'd seen me. She laughed when she ran me over,' Jenkins said. 'She'd seen me. There's nothing wrong with this lady, but she needs to go to a penitentiary.'"

Not enough body armor to go around
MSNBC | Submitted by: Kaiser Wilhelm
"This high-tech 'system' - the Kevlar vest and 'small-arms protective inserts,' which the troops call SAPI plates - is dramatically reducing the kind of torso injuries that have killed soldiers on the battlefield in wars past. Soldiers will not patrol without the armor - if they can get it. But as of now, there is not enough to go around. Going into the war in Iraq, the Army decided to outfit only dismounted combat soldiers with the plated vests, which cost about $1,500 each... Last month, Rep. Ted Strickland (D-Ohio) and 102 other House members wrote to Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, to demand hearings on why the Pentagon had been unable to provide all U.S. service members in Iraq with the latest body armor. In the letter, the lawmakers cited reports that soldiers' parents had been purchasing body armor with ceramic plates and sending it to their children in Iraq." [Again we say: this is totally unacceptable. There shouldn't be any of this stuff sitting on retail shelves. The Pentagon ought to buy up all remaining stocks and ship them to Iraq.]

WKMG-TV 6 Orlando | Submitted by: Soylent
"Patricia Vanlester, 41, was knocked unconscious and, her sister said, 'trampled by a herd of elephants' by a stampede of shoppers reaching for DVD players that went on sale at 6 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving, according to Orange City police and the sister, Linda Ellzey... An investigation by WKMG-Local 6 reveals Vanlester has filed 16 previous claims of injuries at Wal-Mart stores and other places she has shopped or worked, according to Wal-Mart, court files and state records. Her sister, who accompanied her Friday on the visit to Wal-Mart, has also filed a prior injury claim against Wal-Mart, with Vanlester as her witness, a company spokeswoman said yesterday... Vanlester has for years complained of head, back, neck, leg or arm pain caused by slipping and falling, objects falling on her and other accidents, according to medical records in a public court file examined by WKMG-Local 6."
