Wannabe klansman shot during initiation ceremony

"Gregory Allen Freeman, age 45, of 805 Cambridge Ave., Elizabethton, was charged with aggravated assault and felony reckless endangerment in the incident, which occurred Saturday at approximately 8 p.m. in a wooded area near 363 Bill West Rd... According to Sheriff Ed Graybeal, 'During the initiation process, several rounds were fired in the air, one of which accidentally struck a participant, Jeffery S. Murr, age 24, of 458 1/2 Carolina Ave., Erwin.' WCSD Lt. Keith Sexton, one of four investigators who responded to the scene, said all eight individuals present, including the victim, told police the gathering was a KKK initiation... 'It was in the woods and it was totally dark with no lights, and I guess the guy just got in the way (of the shot).'"

Suicidal troops killing selves in Iraq

"A 29-year-old counselor at a residence for troubled children has been accused of holding down a 14-year-old resident while a classmate sodomized him with a broomstick. The counselor, Jason Brown of Mount Vernon, was arrested Friday on a charge of first-degree sexual abuse and was being held at the Westchester County Jail."

Pinochet's past continues to haunt Chile

"The bodies of at least 400 Chileans who 'disappeared' under ex-dictator Augusto Pinochet's bloody rule were dumped into the ocean weighed down with pieces of railroad track, according to new court testimonies published yesterday in Chilean newspaper La Nacion. The paper cited 12 retired helicopter mechanics who, breaking decades of silence, recounted macabre details of the operation to Judge Juan Guzman, who is investigating charges of human-rights abuses under Pinochet's 1973-1990 rule... 'There were at least 40 trips. In each one, they loaded eight to 15 bundles [corpses] aboard the Puma helicopters.'"

Babysitter shakes 9-month-old to death

"A Monmouth County woman was scheduled to appear in court Monday on charges that she shook a 9-month-old girl who later died from her injuries. Flor De Los Angeles, 25, is charged with second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree child endangerment, counts that authorities said could be upgraded in the coming days. An autopsy found the shaking caused the infant's brain to swell, authorities said, but an official cause of death was still pending."

"A naked man was found having intercourse with a horse in a stable on McCaffery Road around 6:30 a.m. on Nov. 17. Flathead County Sheriff Jim Dupont said the man, still nude, fled on foot when the owner of the horse entered the stable. 'He left his boots and a bottle of hand lotion behind.' Dupont said. The incident came just days after a Flathead County deputy reported his horse missing... The horse was back in its stable by late in the weekend with traces of lanolin around its rectum, Dupont said. 'It appears we have a serial horse rapist.'"

City council requires residents to own guns

"Geuda Springs has no local police force; the Sumner County Sheriff's department is responsible for policing the area. Sheriff Gerald Gilkey said the ordinance makes him concerned for the safety of his officers. 'This throws up red flags,' he said. The town's city attorney, Thomas Herlocker, also opposes the measure, which has not taken effect because it has yet to be published. He said he plans to ask the council to reverse itself on the issue."

TV news network shut down in Iraq

"The Iraqi Governing Council ordered the Arabic-language television network Al-Arabiya to shut down its operation in Baghdad, sending officials from the Interior Ministry to the network's headquarters to 'seize their uplink and transmission equipment until further notice.' 'This is in response to their broadcasting the full Saddam Hussein audiotape' released November 16... Al-Arabiya news director Salah Negm, speaking from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, told CNN that the network remains in Iraq... 'Our jobs as journalist is not to ignore the existence of Saddam Hussein or Osama bin Laden or whoever. We can bury our heads in the sand and say, "They don't exist." But, actually, they exist. People want to know the news.'"

"Sixty-six year-old John Wayne Riddle was the chairman of a group called COMPASS. That organization is trying to stop the spread of adult entertainment businesses in the metro area. Saturday night, Louisville Metro Police arrested Riddle and 42-year-old Mary Perry. Officers found Riddle and Perry together inside his vehicle at 17th and Rowan streets in the Portland neighborhood. Detectives say Riddle admitted to picking up Perry for prostitution. Riddle reportedly also had a bottle of Viagra inside his vehicle that he told police he planned to use... Officers say Riddle also admits to coming to the area on several other occasions to pick up prostitutes for sex."
