Viewership
On the first full day this page went live, 100,000 people visited this Rotten News page. Of course that was the day after the WTC attacks, so that number is somewhat distorted. Right now this page gets between 50,000 and 75,000 people every day.

Mainichi Daily News | Submitted by: LucrezaBorgia
"Investigators said that Aki tried to put her daughter in the bath on the evening of Oct. 25, but got angry when she wouldn't listen. Aki splashed the girl's burns with sterilizer, but her and her husband failed to take her to a doctor for immediate treatment, and she died in the predawn hours of Nov. 2, police said... it was reportedly discovered that Midori had abused her daughter, failing to properly feed her and locking her in the closet."

Tommy Franks ponders U.S. military junta
NewsMax | Submitted by: a friend of Ann Onymous
"Gen. Tommy Franks says that if the United States is hit with a weapon of mass destruction that inflicts large casualties, the Constitution will likely be discarded in favor of a military form of government. Franks, who successfully led the U.S. military operation to liberate Iraq, expressed his worries in an extensive interview he gave to the men's lifestyle magazine Cigar Aficionado. [Excellent choice of venue, sir!] ... If that happens, Franks said, 'the Western world, the free world, loses what it cherishes most, and that is freedom and liberty we've seen for a couple of hundred years in this grand experiment that we call democracy.' ... He is the first high-ranking official to openly speculate that the Constitution could be scrapped in favor of a military form of government."

ABC News | Submitted by: prettynwitty
"Jermaine Jackson says the child molestation charges his brother Michael faces are part of a racially motivated vendetta and an 'extortion' plot... 'If you handcuff my brother you handcuff the whole family,' Jermaine told ABCNEWS' Barbara Walters." [Is he suggesting that the entire family shares their beds with children?] ... 'They're a bunch of racist rednecks out there who don't care about people.'" [Next time, let's spend a few extra bucks to hire racist rednecks who care.]

General: let's all just forget Osama
Wire Services | Submitted by: prettynwitty
"A senior U.S. general said on Friday that al Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden had 'taken himself out of the picture' and that his capture was not essential to winning the 'war on terror.' General Peter Pace, vice chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at U.S. military headquarters just north of Kabul that the 11,500-strong U.S.-led force hunting al Qaeda and Taliban militants was not focusing on individuals... America's new ambassador to Kabul Zalmay Khalilzad said earlier this week that the U.S. military would 'redouble' its efforts to find bin Laden and other al Qaeda and Taliban leaders."

A witness told the Inquirer that the residents got furious when firefighters hosed water on the surrounding factories first instead of the shanties... when they started to pull out the water hose, the residents tried to grab the nozzle to hose down their own houses. When the firefighters resisted, the residents beat them up... The firefighters lost the nozzles of their hoses and other equipment during the attack."

More bad news for FBI crime lab
Wire Services | Submitted by: JJ
"The National Academy of Sciences has concluded that a technique the FBI has used for decades to match bullets to crimes is flawed... The study's publication next month could open the door to hundreds, even thousands of appeals, and give defense lawyers in future cases new ammunition for undermining expert testimony... The findings are the latest in a string of controversies and embarrassments this year to hit the FBI lab, which pledged to remake itself after a scandal in the 1990s over bad science."

Paper required to supplement imaginary ballots
Wired | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"California will become the first state requiring all electronic voting machines produce a voter-verifiable paper receipt... With a receipt, voters will be able to verify that their ballots have been properly cast. However, they will not be allowed to keep the receipts, which will be stored at voting precincts and used for a recount if any voting irregularities arise... In addition to the voter receipt, Secretary of State Shelley called for the creation of a technical oversight committee as well as additional requirements for software testing and auditing and new security protocols for manufacturers. He also called for random field testing on election days to ensure that voting machines are functioning properly." [So the voting machines are untrustworthy without the printers, but they won't be retrofitted until 2006?]
