China plagued by grotesque rat poisoning murders
Ft. Worth Star-Telegram | Submitted by: sTabby
"Each story is ghastlier than the last. A shop owner poisons the snacks at a rival's store, and 38 people die. A widow spikes the lunch at her husband's funeral, killing 10. A man seeks vengeance against his married lover by targeting her children. Across China, aggrieved parties are increasingly turning to an outlawed but easily available weapon: a particularly lethal form of rat poison called 'Dushuqiang.' Dushuqiang (pronounced doo-shoo-CHIANG') is said to be 100 times deadlier than cyanide. Just 5 milligrams - a dusting - can kill a human being, and it remains widely available despite a ban dating to the mid-1990s." [Rat poison was outlawed, so now only outlaws have rat poison.]

Sheriff's son charged in brutal gangbang rape
Orange County Weekly | Submitted by: juanholmes
"Prosecutors accuse Haidl, Nachreiner and 18-year-old Keith James Spann (who did not attend the Nov. 5 hearing) of drugging the alleged victim senseless before sodomizing, raping and sexually molesting her with a cigarette, bottles and a pool cue. Exhibit A in the prosecution case is the Sony Hand-Held camera recording of the incident made by the defendants... high-priced defense attorneys hope they can block admissibility of the DVD or negate its impact on a future jury by portraying the Rancho Cucamonga girl - called only 'Jane Doe' in court proceedings - as a promiscuous party animal who already knew the three boys intimately and had consented to the gangbang before passing out." [Then why wouldn't the video include a statement by the victim indicating that consent?]

Biowarfare experts frighten CIA
Wire Services | Submitted by: Kaiser Wilhelm
"A panel of outside experts told the CIA that advances in technology due to genomic research could produce the worst known diseases and the 'most frightening' biological weapons, a CIA report said on Friday. 'The effects of some of these engineered biological agents could be worse than any disease known to man,' the panel told the CIA... Growth in biotechnology and a knowledge explosion due to the genomic revolution which provided an understanding of genes and how they work could be used in unpredictable ways, the panel warned. 'The same science that may cure some of our worst diseases could be used to create the world's most frightening weapons.'"

"Powell described his killer schedule in an interview Thursday with Abdul Rahman Al-Rashed, a reporter for a London-based Saudi newspaper. 'So do you use sleeping tablets to organize yourself?' Al-Rashed asked. 'Yes. Well, I wouldn't call them that,' Powell said. 'They're a wonderful medication - not medication. How would you call it? Endangered birds preying on endangered fish
CNN | Submitted by: f00f
"A protected species of bird is devouring rare fish in the German state of Bavaria and creating a dilemma for local officials who now want federal permission to kill birds that once appeared headed for extinction. The population of cormorants - black, long-beaked fishing specialists which can stay underwater for up to 30 seconds - has ballooned to over 6,000 in the Alpine state. And they are feeding on rare fish species such as grayling and pearl fish, which are unique to the region, German officials said. 'The problem is that a protected bird is eating protected fish,' a spokesman for the Bavarian environment ministry said this week."

Daytona Beach News-Journal | Submitted by: Big Gay Al
"Denise G. Butterfield said she began to pull into one of the handicapped parking spaces at about 10 a.m., when suddenly her car jumped a curb, zipped between two poles and came to rest against the front of the building, sending people running outside for a look. 'I never hit the accelerator,' Butterfield, 69, said after the crash. 'The gas engaged itself.' A police officer did a quick check of her car but said everything seemed to be working properly... Police issued Butterfield a citation for careless driving before she went on her way. But she still found reason to smile: She got her license renewed."

Serial rapist to be plagued by hemorrhoids
New York Post | Submitted by: Mr. Ramon
"A convicted serial rapist begged a Queens judge to show him mercy at his sentencing yesterday, telling the jurist, 'I don't want to die in prison.' Shaking violently and using a cane to stand up, Frank Baylor, 53, a self-proclaimed stroke victim, told Supreme Court Justice Arthur Cooperman that dying behind bars is, 'my biggest fear.' ... One of the women was in court yesterday to confront her attacker. 'I forgive you for what you have done to me,' the 29-year-old woman said to Baylor after a brief sermon in which she talked about various plagues that sexual predators will suffer. 'God will inflict him with hemorrhoids and scats ... his body shall be meat upon the fowls,' she said."

World's most nefarious hackers tracked in giant database
BBC | Submitted by: the nefarious Reid Fleming
"The underground network is vast, with thousands of individuals and groups, ranging from lurkers who are intrigued by hacker chat to 'script kiddies' who try out hacker tools for a laugh... Net security companies like TruSecure in the US, have the job of keeping an eye on these groups to work out which weak net spot they are planning to attack next. It currently tracks more than 11,000 individuals in about 900 different hacking groups and gangs... Pieces of information about groups and individuals are put together like a giant jigsaw in TruSecure's mammoth database, nicknamed the 'brain.' It graphically shows the big players, where they live, who they know, who they hate, what tools they have developed, and even whether they have a cat. This has enabled the team to help out with 54 investigations by law enforcement agencies." [Please note the identity of the submitter.]
