Viewership
On the first full day this page went live, 100,000 people visited this Rotten News page. Of course that was the day after the WTC attacks, so that number is somewhat distorted. Right now this page gets between 50,000 and 75,000 people every day.

Cannibal soldiers impervious to bullets
New York Times | Submitted by: Pussy Galore
"In May, two United Nations military observers stationed in northeastern Congo at an outpost near Bunia, a town not far from Beni, were killed by a local tribal militia. The peacekeepers' bodies were split open and their hearts, livers and testicles taken - common signs of cannibalism... when I asked whether he himself believed that eating a human heart could make a man bulletproof, Horeb replied: 'That is a very good question for me. I know that it can be difficult for you to believe, for you from the West. It can be difficult for you to publish it. But here, the spiritual impacts on the natural. Here in Africa, I know it is possible.'"

BBC | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Three members of the same family accused of being witches have committed suicide, Indian police say. The deaths occurred in the village of Kamalpura in the state of Bihar, in eastern India, where attacks on people accused of witchcraft are common... the three all took poison and died, the police say. 'They could not bear the continuous torture and finally lost the will to live,' a relative told the police. Farting toy freaks out FBI, airport security
BBC | Submitted by: Phatlor
"Dave Rogerson's life-size mechanical terrier set off a security detector at Norfolk Airport in Virginia. Armed security staff were alerted when the toy's wind-breaking mechanism registered as a high explosive on sensitive monitoring equipment. Mr Rogerson, 31, from Thorner, Leeds, was questioned by FBI agents and looked on in amazement as they took a series of swabs from the mechanical toy's rear end... 'They told me it is the highest reading they had for explosives and they took it very seriously. They were very jumpy and convinced there was something explosive in the dog.'"

Wal-Mart conducting internal investigation
New York Times | Submitted by: Elaine Chao
"Every night for months, Victor Zavala Jr., who was arrested on Thursday in a 21-state immigration raid, said he showed up at the Wal-Mart store in New Jersey to clean floors... he and four others employed by a cleaning contractor worked at the Wal-Mart in Old Bridge every night of the year, except Christmas and New Year's Eve... Wal-Mart said yesterday that it had begun an internal investigation and would dismiss anyone in its work force who did not have proper immigration papers... 'We have seen no evidence thus far that anyone in Wal-Mart is involved in any scheme involving illegal workers,' Tom Williams, a company spokesman, said."

Man goes over falls, kids expected to copycat
Buffalo News | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Kirk Jones is no hero. He also set a dangerous precedent for daredevil copycats... Niagara County Coroner James Joyce is concerned about how people will react to the unprecedented stunt... 'Are the floodgates going to open up? Are we going to get young kids out there with their testosterone flowing, saying: "I can do that! I'm in better shape than that 40-year-old man!" I can see it now, believe me.' In his 25 years as coroner, Joyce said he can't even count the number of bodies he has examined of people who died going over the falls. Most of them had multiple internal and external trauma injuries, he said. Many bodies are never found." [Rotten.com discourages anyone from risking their life on Niagara Falls. But if you plan on doing it anyway, please consider us in your will.]

Girl expelled for writing violent short story
CNN | Submitted by: Mikey Mike
"A high school freshman expelled for writing a fictional account of a student who falls asleep in class and dreams of killing a teacher can return to school Monday while officials reconsider the disciplinary action. Rachel Boim, 14, who lived in the Denver area at the time of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado, that left 15 dead, was expelled Wednesday from Roswell High School in this Atlanta suburb under the Fulton County School District's 'zero tolerance' policy... Rachel was suspended her for 10 days for 'inappropriate writings that describe the threat of bodily harm toward a school employee' ... and she was expelled after a hearing her father described as a travesty." [But school administrators have since temporarily rescinded the expulsion, pending a review by the district.]

Australia beats Namibia 142-0
New Zealand Herald | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Australia rewrote the World Cup rugby record books today when they thrashed a hopelessly outclassed Namibia 142-0 in a pool A miss-match and set a host of team and personal bests along the way. The score was three points short of New Zealand's tournament record 145-17 win over Japan in 1995 but was by far the biggest winning margin... Namibia, who lost their opening games 14-67 to Argentina and 7-64 to Ireland, barely made a tackle, failed to compete at the setpiece or breakdown and never once threatened to score."
