Home invaders knock on wrong door
Guardian UK | Submitted by: MJ
"A Chinese martial arts expert was in custody yesterday after turning the tables on four burglars armed with knives, killing two of them and seriously wounding a third... The butchery, worthy of a Quentin Tarantino film, began shortly before midnight on Friday when the four men knocked at the apartment of a Chinese hairdresser in the centre of Empoli... the attackers allegedly threatened to rape the two women unless they told them where the rest of their money was hidden. At this point the doctor managed to free himself, seize a knife from one of the aggressors and deliver a series of lethal stab wounds. Investigators found the body of one man, who had been stabbed in the heart, sprawled on the staircase and another man bleeding to death in the street from a wound to his leg. A third man is recovering in hospital from a punctured lung."

In a recent interview, he said that the Fuehrer had personally ordered him to burn his body."

Native Americans still unhappy about Skull & Bones
Indian Country | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"President George W. Bush, his father and grandfather are and were members of the Skull and Bones Society... In 1986 some members of the Skull and Bones Society contacted members of the Apache Nation, the San Carlos Apache specifically and told them the Skull and Bones Society had Geronimo’s skull on display. The story was told how a written journal detailed the raid on the Chiricahua Apache’s grave at Fort Sill, Okla... The alleged grave desecration took place in 1918, before federal or state laws were in place to protect such activity against American Indian burial sites... Ironically NAGPRA was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush, a member of the Skull and Bones Society."

Halliburton exempted from Clean Water Act
San Francisco Chronicle | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"For several years the Environmental Protection Agency has been studying whether an increasingly popular - but environmentally controversial - drilling technique used by Halliburton Co. and other big oil and gas operators pollutes underground drinking water supplies. Now Republicans drafting broad energy legislation have decided not to wait for the EPA to issue its final report. Instead, the House-Senate compromise on the energy bill exempts the technique, known as 'hydraulic fracturing,' from some of the controls of the 1974 Safe Drinking Water Act... language agreed to by House-Senate negotiators would, for the first time, end a requirement that construction activities related to oil and gas exploration operate with a permit under the Clean Water Act."

Mormon civil servant unhappy about gays
KUTV-TV 2 Utah | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"A Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teacher at a federal job training center is claiming religious harassment because he was not allowed to object to government recognition of Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. Kenneth Gee, who teaches at the Centennial Job Corps Center, claimed in a lawsuit that superiors denied him the opportunity to object on religious grounds. As a member of the Mormon church, he said he views homosexuality as immoral and forbidden by the Bible. Gee claimed he was advised by superiors in 2000 to celebrate Gay and Lesbian Pride Month and was e-mailed then-President Clinton's proclamation on the issue with the comment, 'Morality is simply the attitude we adopt toward people we personally dislike.' ... He claimed the communications encouraging acceptance of homosexuals continued even after President Bush took office and dropped formal recognition of Gay and Lesbian Pride Month." [Heaven forfend!]

Robot monkeys love having wires in their brains
MSNBC | Submitted by: optional
"After removing patches of skull from two monkeys to expose the outer surface of their brains, Nicolelis and his colleagues stuck 96 of those tiny wires about a millimeter deep in one monkey’s brain and 320 of them in the other animal's brain. The surgeries were painstaking, taking about 10 hours, and ended with the pouring of a substance like dental cement over the area to substitute for the missing bits of skull. The monkeys were unaffected by the surgery, Nicolelis said. But now they had tufts of wires protruding from their heads... Asked if the monkeys seemed to mind the experiments, Nicolelis answered with an emphatic 'No.'"

Naked baby pictures are a thing of the past
Dallas Observer | Submitted by: PEDRO
"Never did Jacqueline Mercado imagine that four rolls of film dropped off at an Eckerd Drugs one-hour photo lab near her home would turn her life inside out, threaten to send her to jail and prompt the state to take away her kids... a technician viewed the images and decided they were 'suspicious,' according to a police report. As required under Texas law, he immediately contacted local police... the police and the Dallas County District Attorney's Office presented the photos to a grand jury in January and came away with indictments against Mercado and Fernandez for 'sexual performance of a child,' a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The charges centered on a single photo, the breast-feeding shot." [Buy a goddamned digital camera, already.]

Wiccans caught hanging out in sewer
Dover Times Reporter | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Most people in the Tuscarawas Valley have probably never heard of the Dragon Knights or Black Dragons - two area wiccan-pagan groups. They were underground groups, pretty much unknown to the mainstream until a recent encounter with police. Dover police came upon an initiation ceremony inside a storm sewer drain on Oct. 4 and the subsequent events brought the groups to the surface... When asked what they do, Caldwell said 'A little bit of everything.' He explained that some members are 'natural born mediums' into the supernatural, while others are magic practitioners and/or witches. McConnell said their rituals don't involve Satan or animal sacrifices."

Hax0r stands trial for crippling DoS
BBC | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Aaron Caffrey, 19, is alleged to have set up the group called Allied Haxor Elite. Mr Caffrey, who is accused of crashing systems at the port of Houston in Texas, admitted being part of the group but denied he had ever illegally hacked in to a computer. The teenager, from Shaftesbury in Dorset, told Southwark Crown Court that hackers operated legally, but that people who entered computer systems illegally were known as 'crackers.' [Sigh. Not this again.] ... Scheduling systems at Houston - the eighth largest port in the world - went down after they were bombarded with thousands of electronic messages in September 2001."
