"An man was accidentally crushed to death by a flatbed truck hauling portable toilets to Central Park for the Dave Matthews free concert, just hours before the band took the stage last night. Ronald Darby, 51, of Manhattan, fell under the wheels of the flatbed, emblazoned with the logo 'Why Go Anywhere Else,' at 110th Street as it rolled downtown on Seventh Avenue."

"A book for religion studies teachers in French public schools has been withdrawn from sale because of disputed statements it made about Jews and the Holocaust, education officials said on Friday. ... According to the daily Liberation, one passage compared the fate of the Jewish people to the death of Jesus Christ. Another section said some Jews had paranoid reactions to the Holocaust while non-Jews felt overly guilty. ... one passage in the book spoke of 'the Jewish people, who have only very distant and politically very suspect links with real Judaism.' Another passage said the Holocaust had prompted 'very odd behaviour among Jews and non-Jews, making both very sensitive to any possible resurgence of anti-Semitism. This amounts to an almost paranoid tendency on the one side and often unhealthy guilt feelings on the other.'"

Moussaoui trial completely derailed

"US prosecutors attempting to bring a case against the so-called '20th hijacker,' Zacarias Moussaoui, have been forced to ask for all charges against him to be dropped, a legal manoeuvre they hope will keep him from calling other terrorism suspects as defence witnesses. Prosecutors ran into trouble with the case after two district court orders gave Mr Moussaoui the right to question three suspected al-Qaida members who he says could testify he was not a conspirator in the September 11, 2001 attacks. ... Prosecutors have opposed any direct access between the prisoners and Mr Moussaoui, who has acknowledged his loyalty to Osama bin Laden, and is the only defendant to be charged in the US as a conspirator with the September 11 hijackers."

"Thomas Condon was sentenced today to serve the remaining 13 and one-half months of his prison term for taking pictures of bodies in the Hamilton County morgue in Cincinnati. ... A state appeals court upheld Condon's conviction on charges of gross abuse of a corpse, but reduced his sentence from 30 to 18 months. ... Cause sought in mysterious band incident

"In July 1980, almost 300 children who were competing in a brass band competition in a field near Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, were hit by vomiting, runny noses and sore eyes. The cause of the children's symptoms was never pinpointed, however health authorities at the time suggested it was a result of mass hysteria. But an investigation by BBC's Inside Out documentary team has discovered that the pesticide tridemorph -- which was sprayed near the fields at the time of the incident but later banned in 2000 -- may have caused the reaction. ... The official explanation for the fainting incident is still mass hysteria, although other causes such as nerve gas, contaminated water, radio waves and food poisoning were also considered."

"A fisherman and his six-year-old son in central Vietnam were killed after explosives used to catch fish exploded, officials said today. Le Thanh Phuc, 33, and his youngest son were killed instantly. Phuc's other son, an 11-year-old boy, was seriously injured in the explosion, which happened on Wednesday in Phu Yen province. ...
