Collar bomb possible suicide
CBS News | Submitted by: Reid Fleming

Pleading with police to help him get the bomb off, Wells told authorities he had been forced to rob the bank, indicating that someone else had clasped the bomb to him. ... Former FBI agent Candice DeLong doesn't buy Wells' story that he was kidnapped while delivering pizza and collared with the bomb. 'I had to ask myself would bad guys who are sophisticated enough to devise or develop this collar bomb put it on someone that they had no idea would carry out their plan successfully?' ... 'I think it was less than 30 minutes to get back to them with whatever cash he might have been able to steal,' DeLong said. 'They had no idea what he was going to do. If somebody grabs me and puts a collar bomb around my neck I'm going to the nearest police station and say "get this thing off me."'"

Obscenity case involves bad acting, worse law
Boston Phoenix | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The penultimate segment of a pornographic video called Ass Clowns 3 -- one of five videos at the center of a federal obscenity case -- begins with an Ashleigh Banfield look-alike reporting from Afghanistan. Within moments, she is kidnapped by an Al Qaeda terrorist, who drags her back to a cave occupied by Osama bin Laden and a third terrorist. For the next 20 minutes or so she is slapped, repeatedly spat upon, stripped, and raped, forced to take part in oral and anal sex and vaginal intercourse. ... But perhaps the most important thing about Ass Clowns 3 is this: it could land its distributors, Robert Zicari (a/k/a Rob Black) and his fiancée, Janet Romano (a/k/a Lizzie Borden), in prison for the next 50 years. As Zicari observed in an interview last week with ABC News's Nightline, that's double the amount of prison time faced by Hemant Lakhani, the British national who was recently charged with trying to sell a surface-to-air missile to government agents posing as terrorists seeking to shoot down a commercial airliner."

Building a better bird strike simulant
San Antonio Express-News | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The recipe for synthetic chicken starts with a vat of industrial gelatin, not too unlike the lime, cherry and lemon varieties sold in the grocery store. To that, the "chefs" at Southwest Research Institute add microspheres -- powder-sized capsules of air encased in plastic. The mixture then is poured into coffee can-sized molds and refrigerated, because synthetic chicken apparently will spoil and reek just like real meat if left out at room temperature. When the concoction has solidified, engineers at the institute have Federal Aviation Administration-approved fake birds ranging from 2 to 10 pounds -- a weight and mass that will mimic the impact of real birds when they are fired from the institute's giant compressed gas gun. The faux birds don't smell or taste much like chicken, but they splatter like the real thing when they are blown down the gun's 33-foot-long barrel and into revved-up airplane engines or propellers."
