Alleged child abusers accidentally videotape themselves

"Videotapes from a wireless home security camera that accidentally captured images of a mentally handicapped boy being beaten next door will be allowed as evidence against the kid's foster parents... Judge Robert Anderson's ruling was a big victory for prosecutors, who want to use 11 hours of the videotapes in their case against Frank and Marylynnette Barney... The Barneys' next-door Lombard neighbors... taped the boy being struck and punched after the Barneys' wireless 'nanny cam' broadcast the images to the Kearnses' home-security system, according to authorities. ... the Barneys said they had placed the 'nanny cam' in a heating duct in their foster son's room to keep watch over the boy."

"Schoolgirl Victoria Ivey may have been kicked to death by a jealous pony as she groomed another horse in a field, it was claimed yesterday. As 13-year-old Victoria brushed down Candy, a mare called Molly bolted across the field for no apparent reason and started kicking Candy. Victoria was caught between the two animals and repeatedly kicked. She was airlifted to hospital by helicopter but was declared dead."

Microsoft forced to use Linux machinery

"Microsoft has made a big deal out of asserting that Linux is not fit for the enterprise. But Microsoft itself is using Linux to help protect its servers against denial-of-service attacks. According to a post on the Netcraft Web site, Microsoft changed its DNS settings on Friday so that requests for www.microsoft.com no longer resolve to machines on Microsoft's own network, but instead are handled by the Akamai caching system, which runs Linux. ... As of this writing, Netcraft reports that www.microsoft.com is still running on Linux, although microsoft.com is reported as running on Windows Server 2003."

Clark, the powerful head of Johnson's private and business legal team and a former ambassador to Australia, led the plan and cover-up for the 1963 assassination in Dallas."

"Adam D. Welter, 20, told police the driver of a disabled pickup truck shot him early Monday in the left shoulder, said Capt. Bob Aldrich, of the Anoka County Sheriff's Office. However, Welter apparently wanted to be relieved from an overseas assignment scheduled to begin Monday, and he has acknowledged shooting himself in the left shoulder hours before he was scheduled to leave and making up a story about being attacked, authorities said." Parents oppose cancer treatment for son, flee jurisdiction

A couple who left Utah with their 12-year-old son, defying a court order to give the boy chemotherapy for cancer, were missing Wednesday after the father was released on bail from a weekend arrest in Idaho. ... Utah doctors testified that Parker Jensen has only a 5 percent chance of living without chemotherapy for a cancerous tumor, Ewing's sarcoma. ... But the parents refused, and state lawyers obtained a juvenile-court order for chemotherapy that was supposed to begin Aug. 8. ... Before a court hearing last June, the Jensens told Salt Lake City television KUTV that 45 weeks of chemotherapy would stunt their son's growth and leave him sterile. 'We are totally competent parents, and it's ridiculous that we have to come here (to juvenile court) and prove we can make decisions for our child,' Barbara Jensen told the station."

"The popular Java Anonymous Proxy (JAP), used to anonymise one's comings and goings across the Internet, has been back-doored by court order. The service is currently logging access attempts to a particular, and unnamed, Web site and reporting the IP addys of those who attempt to contact it to the German police. ... After taking the service down for a few days with the explanation that the interruption was 'due to a hardware failure,' the operators then required users to install an 'upgraded version' (ie. a back-doored version) of the app to continue using the service."

Sharks claim California swimmer

"A 50-year-old college instructor taking a morning swim bled to death after she was attacked by a great white shark 15 to 18 feet long, preliminary autopsy results showed Wednesday. Deborah Franzman, of Nipomo, was killed Tuesday as she swam 75 yards offshore alongside a group of seals. Witnesses reported seeing a large fin as Franzman screamed for help. 'Just her side was completely ripped out. She had gouges on both sides of her legs,' said witness Travis Warren."

It appears the slug-like creature found living at the bottom of a Swedish lake shares its ancestry with people. ... 'It is fascinating to think that whatever long-dead animal this simple worm evolved from, so did we.' The new research, reported in the journal Nature, puts humans and the Xenoturbella -- whose Latin name means 'strange flatworm' -- together in the deuterostomes group of species, which contains the vertebrates, as well as starfish, sea urchins and certain marine worms."
