The sound of fan blades struck by flying crap
Independent | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The former American diplomat who exposed false claims that Iraq was trying to purchase uranium from Niger has accused members of the Bush administration of a dirty tricks campaign against him. The revelation of Joseph Wilson's investigation in the African state forced President George Bush to retract claims about Iraq's attempts to buy uranium made in his State of the Union speech two months before the war began. The Administration is alleged to have leaked the name of Mr Wilson's wife, an undercover CIA operative in the field of weapons of mass destruction, with the aim of discrediting him. ... US intelligence officials and the Democrats are furious about the move, arguing that it jeopardises Ms Plame's work and undermines her husband. They have called for an inquiry." [That's a federal crime. Somebody's going down for this.]

Brooklyn judges on the take
Associated Press | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"After 14 years on the bench, Judge Victor Barron spoke with authority at a sentencing last year when he declared, 'No one is above the law.' The sentencing, after all, was his own. The silver-haired Brooklyn judge was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs to begin a three- to nine-year prison term for taking thousands of dollars in bribes -- perhaps the most troubling scene so far in a judicial corruption scandal that one watchdog group calls the worst in the nation."

'An American soldier twisted my arm behind my back and told me to show her some ID, but by the time I had managed to find it, the soldier said that I was too late... As the soldier began to lead me away, Sato began to protest and claimed that we had done nothing wrong by filming the scene and that this was an unreasonable reaction. When he said that, a nearby soldier began kicking him and then another four or five soldiers took him to the ground, removed the safeties from their weapons, aimed their guns at his head and continued to kick at him repeatedly.' ... NYC prosecutors to charge DNA samples with rape
ny1.com | Submitted by: Adam Wilks
"To effectively eliminate the statute of limitations in aging cases, New York will become the first city in the nation to make rape indictments based solely on a DNA profile, before a suspect is even identified, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Monday. If an an individual is eventually arrested and linked to the crime by DNA evidence, the suspect will go on trial, regardless of how much time has elapsed, Bloomberg said. Under state law, indictments cannot be made in crimes more than 10 years old. ... Bloomberg said the city has been lobbying state lawmakers for three years to eliminate the statute of limitations, due to the success of using DNA to solve old cases. He said the pleas will continue despite the new program." [Doesn't exactly sound legal.]

San Antonio Express-News | Submitted by: Daniel Gossett

School superintendent fails must-pass English test
Eagle-Tribune | Submitted by: Jim Jones
"Schools Superintendent Wilfredo T. Laboy has three times failed a basic literacy test all state educators are required to pass, The Eagle-Tribune has learned. Calling it a 'frustrating' and 'emotional' issue, Laboy blamed his failing scores on a lack of preparation and concentration and the fact that English is his second language. ... Japan unwilling to give up sexism
New York Times | Submitted by: LucrezaBorgia
"Japan has tried all sorts of remedies to pull itself out of a 13-year economic slump, from huge public works projects to bailouts of failing companies. Many experts have concluded that the expanding the role of women in professional life could provide a far bigger stimulus than any scheme tried so far. But it often seems that the Japanese would rather let their economy stagnate than send their women up the corporate ladder. ... Earlier this year, former Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, a member of a government commission charged with finding solutions to the population crisis, was widely quoted as saying the main reason for Japan's falling birthrate was the overeducation of its women. Mr. Koizumi's top aide, Yasuo Fukuda, was recently quoted as saying that often women who are raped deserve it, while a legislator from the governing party said, approvingly, that the men who carried out such acts were virile and 'good specimens.'"

People unhappy about Mel Gibson's pet project
Guardian | Submitted by: FaceInTheSea
"On the face of it Mel Gibson's new film, The Passion, appears to be little more than a work of celluloid self-indulgence by a Hollywood veteran. Portraying the final 12 hours of the life of Jesus Christ, it has no distributor, features no stars and the dialogue is in Latin and Aramaic. ... The star has claimed the 'Holy Ghost was working through me on this film, and I was just directing traffic. I hope the film has the power to evangelise.' But a panel of three Jewish and six Catholic scholars, who have studied a draft script, say the film is anti-semitic and theologically inaccurate, portraying Jews as bloodthirsty and vengeful and reviving the worst traditions of the passion plays which contributed to deadly attacks against Jews over the centuries." [Don't worry, they can fix all that in post.]

Film clip of Van Gogh just a hoax
USA Today | Submitted by: Reid Fleming

HavenCo going under, maybe
CNET News.com | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"A widely publicized project to transform a man-made platform in the English Channel into a 'safe haven' for controversial Web businesses has failed due to political, technical and management problems, one of the company's founders said. ... HavenCo is located on a rusting, basketball-court-size fortress erected by the British military during World War II to shoot down Nazi aircraft. Roy Bates, the quirky 'crown prince' of 'Sealand' landed on the abandoned platform in 1966 and claimed it as an independent nation with its own currency, stamps and flag. Although its legal status is unclear, Sealand lies within the territorial boundary of 10 miles claimed by England. ... A Sealand representative said in an e-mail interview on Monday that 'HavenCo is a viable operation.'"
