Liberian soldiers looking fabulous
MSNBC | Submitted by: JOBS
"Few things exemplify the chaos of Liberia more than the sight of doped-up, AK-47-wielding 15-year-olds roaming the streets decked out in fright wigs and tattered wedding gowns. Indeed, some of the more fully accessorized soldiers in Charles Taylor's militia even tote dainty purses and don feather boas. ... According to the soldiers themselves, cross-dressing is a military mind game, a tactic that instills fear in their rivals. It also makes the soldiers feel more invincible. This belief is founded on a regional superstition which holds that soldiers can 'confuse the enemyís bullets' by assuming two identities simultaneously. ... Since flak jackets or infrared goggles arenít available to the destitute Liberian fighters, they opt for evening gowns and frilly blouses."

Traffic accident uncovers hidden church
Reuters | Submitted by: optional
"A car crash this week in a town near New Orleans revealed that a building thought to be a home improvement business was actually a white supremacist church, police said on Friday. The vehicle smashed into the brick storefront in Chalmette, Louisiana, after colliding with two other cars and came to rest amid stacks of racist books and pamphlets, including Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf, they said. A sign proclaimed the building the 'Southern Home Improvement Center' ... but investigators found out it was the New Christian Crusade Church and headquarters of the Christian Defense League. Both organizations were the projects of building owner James Warner, a founder of the American Nazi Party and associate of former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard and Republican gubernatorial candidate David Duke."

Belgium admits American supremacy
CNN | Submitted by: Kaiser Wilhelm
"The Belgian Senate has given final approval to a scaled-down war crimes law that the government hopes will repair relations with Washington and preserve Belgium's role as NATO headquarters. ... The law drops the 'universal jurisdiction' claim from the 1993 original, which had resulted in politically embarrassing complaints against U.S. President George W. Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, among others. U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld threatened in June to move NATO headquarters out of Brussels unless the law was scrapped, and Belgium's European Union partners also expressed concern. ... U.S. officials have said they are waiting for the final text before deciding if it satisfies their concerns."

Cats mutilated by other critters, not imaginary cult
AZ Central | Submitted by: Tim Howard
"Colorado authorities joined their colleagues in Utah on Friday in blaming 45 Denver-area cat slayings in the past year on wildlife, ending weeks of suspicion that budding psychopaths and devil worshippers were killing the pets. ... 'All of the deaths were caused by predators,' Police Chief Ricky Bennett said in suburban Aurora, where 29 cases were reported. Pet owners' reactions were mixed. 'I would be thrilled to know it was something natural, but I would like it explained to me,' said Christy Hughes, who assumed a fox killed her cat in June until animal control officers persuaded her humans were to blame."

India gearing up for world's largest vote fraud
New Scientist | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"India, the world's largest democracy, has announced that every vote in its 2004 national election will be registered and counted using electronic ballot machines. With more than 600 million registered voters, India's parliamentary election is the biggest on Earth. More than 800,000 polling stations are needed nationwide for a general election in India. The last parliamentary elections, held in 1996, used only paper to record votes. This generated 2.5 million ballot boxes and 8000 tonnes of ballot paper." [Well thank God they're getting rid of that pesky paper trail which could be used to evaluate the validity of the digital vote count.]

Installing spyware to catch cheating spouses
CNN | Submitted by: Kaiser Wilhelm
"Suspicious husbands and wives who once might have hired a private eye to find out if their spouses were cheating are now using do-it-yourself technology to check on an increasingly popular hideaway for trysts -- the Internet. Divorce lawyers and marriage counselors say Internet-abetted infidelity, romance originating in chat rooms and fueled by e-mails, is now one of the leading factors in marital breakdowns. ... the convenience and seeming anonymity of the Internet have attracted a new breed of adulterers, people who might have been too timid to make their first forays into infidelity face-to-face."
