Senate cancels Pentagon's assassinations betting pool
CNN | Submitted by: Mikya
"The Pentagon will abandon a plan to establish a futures market to help predict terrorist strikes, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee said Tuesday. Sen. John Warner said he spoke by phone with the program's director, 'and we mutually agreed that this thing should be stopped.' Warner announced the decision not long after Senate Democratic Leader Thomas Daschle took to the floor to denounce the program as 'an incentive actually to commit acts of terrorism.' ... Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said she was appalled to hear of plans to set up 'a futures market in death.' ... Trading was to begin Oct. 1 with 1,000 traders, increasing to at least 10,000 by Jan. 1."

"Israel has given permanent resident status to the 'Black Hebrews,' a community of black Americans, some of whom have been in the country since 1969, the Interior Ministry said Monday. PETA still not making friends
WMTV-TV 15 Madison | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"The display in question is called 'Holocaust on Your Plate'. Eight pictures contrast images of animals in factory farms with pictures from the Holocaust.  It's an attempt by the people for the ethical treatment of animals (PETA) to draw attention to the suffering of animals in factory farms and slaughterhouses. ... 'As a Jew I think there's no better way to honor their memory and make sure they didn't die in vain... We're encouraging people to look at the mindset that allowed the holocaust to happen in relation to the mindset that allows animals to be slaughtered every day in the U.S.'"

French police using odors to ID perps
London Telegraph | Submitted by: UncleGum
"Scientists working for French police have perfected a technique for 'bottling' smells at the scene of a crime to identify suspects by the odour they have left behind. After conducting a two-year-long programme of tests on a method of detection known as 'odourology,' they have concluded that smell can be as effective as using fingerprints or DNA samples to link a criminal with a crime. [As effective as DNA? Preposterous.] The French national police force's Scientific and Technical Unit, based in Lyon, established that trained sniffer dogs could be presented with a crime's 'smell signature,' then successfully match it to the correct suspect in the olfactory equivalent of an identity parade."

Dalai Lama just a guy
News Corporation | Submitted by: Dirty Sammy
"The Dalai Lama has admitted that, in a lifetime dedicated to celibacy and non-violence, he has missed out on sex and that he shoots at hawks in anger. Asked in an interview what experiences he had missed that ordinary people had not, he pointed towards his groin and laughed, saying: 'I obviously missed this.' ... He was not convinced that he would have made a good father, admitting to having a bad temper. That temper led him to aim his air rifle at hawks, he told Conrad Kiechel, international editorial director of Reader's Digest. 'I feed birds, peaceful birds. I'm non-violent, but if a hawk comes when I'm feeding birds, I lose my temper and get my air rifle.' He did not shoot to kill, 'only to scare the hawks.'"

Loch Ness Monster has vanished

"The Loch Ness monster is a Loch Ness myth. At least according to the British Broadcasting Corp., which says a team which trawled the loch for any signs of the famous monster came up with nothing more than a buoy moored several yards below the surface. The team used 600 separate sonar beams and satellite navigation technology to trawl the loch, but found no trace of any monster, the BBC said in a television program broadcast Sunday."

Judge says sex offenders can live near schools
Court TV | Submitted by: Tim Howard
"A federal judge issued an order Friday blocking enforcement of a state law that prohibits sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a school or day care center. The order by U.S. District Judge Robert Pratt came in a federal lawsuit filed by the Iowa Civil Liberties Union last month and expanded Friday to include 'all people who are subject to the residency restriction.' The lawsuit said the requirement makes it nearly impossible for an offender to find a place to live 'because there is virtually no place in towns or urban areas in Iowa that is not within 2,000 feet of a school or daycare center.'"

Bible versus science again
Sacramento Bee | Submitted by: Reid Fleming
"Releasing public school students for an hour of religious instruction off-campus can build positive character development and also boost academic performance, according to a study released Monday. ... Overall, the study said, students enjoy learning about God, Jesus and the Bible. In their everyday life, they use what they learn in the program when it comes to manners, staying away from drugs and following the tenets of the Ten Commandments. ... Lance Aguilar, an eighth-grader at Carmichael's Starr King Middle School, said his behavior improved when he joined the released-time program, leaving school once a week for Bible study instead of attending his sixth period science class." [Oh, that is just too perfect.]
