DC police doubted sniper's blackness
World Net Daily | Submitted by: muzzlethwaite
"An eyewitness to the first Beltway sniper shooting says a black police detective here was skeptical about his description of two black men fleeing the scene in a dark, older-model car... "It was a black cop who interviewed me the second time, but I guess he didn't like that when I said black people. He kept asking me, 'How do you know it's black people?'"

Story of an Iraqi deserter
MSNBC | Submitted by: arabchick
"His [Iraqi] unit, about 30 men, slept in muddy burrows on a hillside, he said. Breakfast was tea and crusty bread. At midday: rice and a single cucumber to share between two soldiers. There was no dinner... U.S. bombs killed at least five members of his unit. About the same number were wounded, he said. "There is no medical help," he added. "They are left to die."

Hundreds of rifles in Canadian heist
Canoe | Submitted by: Tim Howard
High caliber high jinx: "Police were requesting the public's help Friday after 382 hunting rifles were stolen earlier this week from a truck's trailer in a parking lot. Montreal police Cmdr. Leonard Lechman said the company will be lectured about security. "People who might be found in possession of this type of weapon could be accused of possession of stolen goods," Lechman said. Police have few clues but believe the theft was committed by members of organized crime." Or Muhammad & Malvo wannabes.

For 89-year old codger, it's Murder One
Court TV | Submitted by: Tim Howard
"Prosecutors said Monday they will file murder charges against an 89-year-old man who told police he smothered his 85-year-old wife in her nursing home bed to end her pain. Marsha Meyer, one of Morris and Cornelia Meyer's two daughters, decried prosecutors' decision. "Not an 89-year-old man," she said. "He can hardly walk any more. It was an act of mercy." That, and Kevorkian is still on ice in the cooler.

Belgium to follow Dutch marijuana lead, man
Guardian | Submitted by: Tim Howard
"The Belgian parliament has voted to legalise the personal use of cannabis, within certain guidelines, for anyone over the age of 18. The move, which has been the subject of fierce debate in Belgium for the last two years, will allow users to smoke small quantities of the drug in private, provided they do not disturb public order. Its sale will, however, remain illegal and Belgium will not tolerate Dutch-style coffee shops selling cannabis over the counter. Hard drugs will continue to be outlawed." Heavy.

Fatty flys off handle; offs dad, stabs mum
Sun | Submitted by: Tim Howard
"A boy of 16 murdered his dad and stabbed his mum so he could kill a bully without shaming them, a court was told yesterday. Overweight James MacDonald was obsessed with revenge over his torment at college. But he was feared the effect a murder trial would have on dad Hugh, a civil engineer, and his police worker mum Fiona. He decided he had to kill them first." Real nice, Tubby.

Redneck bridge really much further north
Canoe | Submitted by: Tim Howard
"Want to see one of the covered bridges Kentucky boasts about? Visit New Hampshire. A Kentucky Department of Travel spokeswoman conceded, with much chagrin, that a bridge used in a travel ad for that state is, indeed, a New Hampshire bridge. "I apologize," Jayne McClew said Thursday. "I was so adamant that it was our bridge until I looked at the right picture." Jayne, lay off the moonshine while you're at work.

Whitey charges more for 'hood haircut
Denver Post | Submitted by: Tim Howard
"Sophia Burns came in for a trim, but says she left a Denver hair salon with an emotional cut that led to a racial discrimination lawsuit in federal court. Burns, a 22 year old African-American, said the operators of a Great Clips for Hair salon at 5145 Chambers Road charged her an 'ethnicity' fee when she came in for a haircut on March 8. Burns said the shop's owner, Brenda Cripe, said the salon "usually catered to white people," according to a lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court. "There was not much work needed to style their (white people's) hair, but that with black people, there was more to it and that was why she was being charged," Cripe said, according to the lawsuit." New name idea: Great KKKlips.

Totally not a freedom of speech issue!
Missoulian | Submitted by: Ewnabommer
Submitter writes: At least, that's what those responsible claim. However, I go to this school, and even among professors who teach in the same college, nobody seems to know or be willing to say just exactly what got this man fired. Calling it a "personnel issue" conveniently excuses the dean from elaborating. The dean, by the way, recently announced that he's leaving his post for a job elsewhere.

Bush kicks Geneva Convention's ass
Globe and Mail | Submitted by: Ann Onymous
"The next time you see a video of captive U.S. troops in Iraq, spare a thought for the 18 Afghans released this month from the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. They showed up yesterday in Kabul, cleared, for what it's worth, of suspicion. One of them, Salaiman Shah, told Agence France-Presse that he'd been picked up in northern Afghanistan by forces of the savage warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum. He said he was tortured and kept for days without food before being turned over to U.S. forces, eventually spending 18 months in a two-metre-square cell at Guantanamo. Mr. Shah said he had no connection to the former Taliban regime or al-Qaeda, and apparently his U.S. interrogators eventually came to believe him."

Media advised to play up patriotism, smother protests
Washington Post | Submitted by: Ann Onymous
"Get the following production pieces in the studio NOW: Patriotic music that makes you cry, salute, get cold chills! Go for the emotion," advised McVay Media, a Cleveland-based consultant, in a "War Manual" memo to its station clients. "Air the National Anthem at a specified time each day as long as the USA is at war." The company, which describes itself as the largest radio consultant in the world, also has been counseling talk show stations to "Make sure your hosts aren't 'over the top.' Polarizing discussions are shaky ground. This is not the time to take cheap shots to get reaction... not when our young men and women are 'in harm's way.'"

Code Red could trigger virtual lockdown
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette | Submitted by: motrinwoman
"Homeland security officials have been vague about what protective measures might be taken under Code Red. But Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge has said such measures might be similar to those put in place Sept. 11, 2001, which means planes could be grounded, borders closed, government buildings shut down and road and rail traffic curtailed."

Mainichi Daily News | Submitted by: LucrezaBorgia
