Aftenposten | Submitted by: birdbomb
"A young Norwegian mother who took a litter of puppies to her own breast when her dog died giving birth remains proud of her unusual move. Now, six weeks later, both her infant son and eight of the puppies that survived are crawling around the family's Christmas tree in Siggerud, west of Oslo." Sweet!

Big Brother's tools already running
New York Times | Submitted by: Soylent
"In the Pentagon research effort to detect terrorism by electronically monitoring the civilian population, the most remarkable detail may be this: Most of the pieces of the system are already in place. Because of the inroads the Internet and other digital network technologies have made into everyday life over the last decade, it is increasingly possible to amass Big Brother like surveillance powers through Little Brother means."

Darwin award wannabe almost made it
Lancaster New Era | Submitted by: Chilly
"There was a fire pit and a small flame. He was trying to get the fire going with some drippings of gas from a plastic container. The flame from the fire ignited the vapor and it exploded." This guy, a CEO of a rubber recycling company, thought it was a good idea to use gasoline to start a rubbish fire.

Seven headless sheep found on railroad
WKMG-TV 6 Orlando | Submitted by: Rio
"A woman walking her dog along some railroad tracks discovered the carcasses of seven headless sheep, leading police to investigate if the animals were killed as part of a cult or other bizarre ritual. "Usually it's involving some type of religious practice or another," said Sgt. Ron Hartley, who runs the Hillsborough County sheriff's department environmental unit. Hartley said police were seeking to determine if the animals were decapitated as part of a Santeria ritual or pagan sacrifice."

Jesus had a belly button, wowee
Raleigh News and Observer | Submitted by: Crazy Quagga
"Earlier this year, in a speech that rattled many, Chicago Bishop C. Joseph Sprague challenged some of Christianity's most basic beliefs, including the virgin birth. Now, Abingdon Press, a division of the United Methodist Publishing House, has printed a slim volume of Sprague's beliefs, titled Affirmations of a Dissenter. In it, the Northern Illinois bishop says Jesus was most likely born through the natural process of procreation. 'He was the child of human parents, complete with a belly button and genetic code,' the bishop writes."

Can't tell female genitals from male
Bowling Green Daily News | Submitted by: working stiff
A follow-up of an earlier story, but an awesome follow-up: "A Simpson County veterinarian has determined that the severed animal genitals a Simpson County Sheriff’s Department representative showed him Wednesday could not have belonged to the female Great Pyrenees owned by the woman who received the flesh at her workplace Friday. "It’s from a male", John Curry said."

WTC detritus less toxic than feared
BBC | Submitted by: Ann Onymous
A little good news, just in time for the holidays: "The dust that covered large parts of lower Manhattan following the September 11 attack was less toxic than had been feared, research suggests. This is because most of the individual particles were large enough to be expelled from the lungs, rather than penetrating deep into the delicate tissues of the respiratory system." Good to know, but not much help when you consider that what's left of those incinerated in the explosions, including the hijackers, is probably still causing some particularly grotty acid rain. Merry Particulate Christmas!

A trip through an airport police state
Indymedia SF | Submitted by: Humphrey T.
"It’s seemingly becoming the norm... lies and deliberate distortions on the part of those in power, no matter how much or how little power they actually wield. True, the TSA staff had expropriated a pair of scissors from our toiletries kit; the story wasn’t entirely made up. Except that I’d been locked in airport jail at the time. Yes, your airports have prison cells, just like your amusement parks, train stations, universities, and national forests."

Man's body parts dragged over all creation
El Paso Times | Submitted by: anonymous
You need a map to truly appreciate the breadth of this unfortunate man's demise: "The widow of the man who died Sunday in a gruesome hit-and-run in East El Paso County asks the trucker who apparently dragged body parts as far as Arizona to come forward. "If he just could tell me the truth, I'm not going to condemn him. It's probably not his fault," said a tearful Yvonne Colon-Rivera, the widow of Frank Paul Rivera, 33, of Tornillo."

US Army makes TP demands
Wire Services | Submitted by: Jack Cox
"The Pentagon's exacting list of standards for chartered vessels is also putting off potential contractors. The 100-page regulation dictates conditions right down to the size of the captain's shower and the colour of his toilet paper. "The answer to this offer is often 'thanks but no thanks'," said the industry source. "They pay fortunes for their vessels, sometimes tenfold the daily hire charge, just to cope with these problems. But it's still too much of a hassle."

Teens like to fuck over the holidays
CNN | Submitted by: kade
"Apparently, losing their virginity is high on the list for those with significant others, according to researchers who reviewed data from a federal health survey... While June is the most common month for teens to have sex for the first time, be it in a casual summer fling or steady relationship, sociologists from Mississippi State University say many teens who are dating seriously choose December as the time to have sex for the first time."
