Christian teacher knocked up by 13 y.o.
Houston Chronicle | Submitted by: Humboldt Honey
"An instructor at a Pasadena Christian school was charged with aggravated sexual assault Friday and is believed to be pregnant after having an affair with a 13-year-old student. Lisa Zuniga, 27, a supervisor at Victory Academy, was being held in lieu of a $30,000 bond. She appears to be pregnant but denies that she is, Pasadena police Sgt. Tim Moon said." It's just gas.

Cemetery monument devoted to aborted fetuses
Wire Services | Submitted by: Dirty Sammy
"A monument for unborn babies must be removed from a public cemetery because it violates land use laws that set aside the space for burying human remains, the Kansas Supreme Court has ruled... "The law says cemetery lots can be sold by the cemetery districts, and can be used by the purchaser only for the interment of human remains."

Imminent death of Net predicted
Tom Paine | Submitted by: Net Addict
"The Internetís promise as a new medium, where text, audio, video and data can be freely exchanged, is under attack by the corporations that control the publicís access to the 'Net, as they see opportunities to monitor and charge for the content people seek and send. The industry's vision is the online equivalent of seizing the taxpayer-owned airways, as radio and television conglomerates did over the course of the 20th century."

Jack the Ripper: Case closed?
MSNBC | Submitted by: Ann Onymous
"Relying on forensic science such as DNA testing and an image enhancement computer, Patricia Cornwell argues in her new book, Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper Case Closed, that Jack the Ripper could have been Walter Sickert, a painter and printmaker who was an important British impressionist. An examination of DNA samples from letters, envelopes and stamps reportedly sent by Jack the Ripper to the Metropolitan Police, and by Sickert, his first wife and others helped Cornwell reach her conclusion." Our verdict: Unlikely.

"Janet Neilson said her 12-year-old Grade 7 son was talking to a classmate on Wednesday when his maths teacher allegedly grabbed him by the neck, pulled him from his desk, slammed him into another desk and then pushed him up against a wall. For-profit schools sell off their textbooks
Globe and Mail | Submitted by: Macki
Edison Schools, Inc. is in financial straits and being forced to sell off its students' school books. D'oh. Whose bright idea was it to contract out teaching, anyway? 23 U.S. states do it. There is so much funny in this article: "Chris Whittle, the company's charismatic chief executive and founder, recently told a meeting of school principals that he'd thought up an ingenious solution to the company's financial woes: Take advantage of the free supply of child labour, and force each student to work an hour a day, presumably without pay, in the school offices."

Buffalo News | Submitted by: wingnut
"London, 32, a native of the Republic of Trinidad, is accused of trying to sell about 6 pounds of heroin to undercover agents at a Town of Evans motel in September. But the substance that London allegedly tried to sell was really a highly potent form of the explosive TNT. It was found in a powdered form, which is rarely seen." More bang for the buck?

Screwed up science books
CNN | Submitted by: Alaska Freegold
"Science and precision should be inseparable. But physics professor John Hubisz and others reviewing many U.S. textbooks say that's hardly the case. The information in the books is often unfocused, fragmented, and sometimes downright wrong. Among them: A map showing the equator running through Texas and Florida, when it's actually about 1,500 miles south; A discussion of sound that says humans cannot hear below 400 hertz. But 47 notes on a piano are below 400 hertz." Etc.
