Yes he's dead, but is he art?
This Is Plymouth | Submitted by: wingnut
"Edwin McKenzie, known as Diogenes the tramp, is being kept at Derriford Hospital mortuary after being discovered in a drawer in Lenkiewicz's Barbican studio. For almost two decades Lenkiewicz kept the location of his friend's body a closely guarded secret and Plymouth City Council was driven to the point of despair in 1984 when it tried to give Diogenes a proper burial but was blocked by a furious Lenkiewicz... But art experts and friends of Mr Lenkiewicz may argue that the tramp is a piece of art and should be put on public display."

Elevator bites man
WOKR-TV 13 Rochester | Submitted by: Captain Prozac
"Authorities said John Wanamaker, 37, facilities manager at the Tonic club on East Avenue, somehow became trapped in a freight elevator shaft and was crushed by the elevator at approximately 2:00 a.m... The elevator, on the first floor of the building, below the club, is big enough to hold two automobiles, as the building was previously the site of a car dealership."

Using HIV to fight Parkinson's
ABC News | Submitted by: anonymous
"Under lentivirus research, the genetic parts of HIV that make it dangerous are removed so that it can't attack immune cells or even reproduce to affect other cells. Instead, researchers replace the bad parts of HIV with therapeutic genetic material. In effect, the virus is turned into one big delivery truck that unloads genetic medicine."

Carter's Nobel tainted by Korean massacre
Village Voice | Submitted by: Herbert Van Biatch
"As Chun Doo Hwan’s paratroopers circled the city of Kwangju and tested its perimeters, a meeting of high-level Carter administration officials, including Warren Christopher and Richard Holbrooke, gave the nod to the coup government to wipe out the rebels. High-level cables... show that the [Carter administration] officials "counseled moderation, but have not ruled out the use of force, should the Koreans need to employ it to restore order." And force was used, in the form of a ferocious battle to take back the city, leaving thousands of pro-democracy students dead.

Rhode Island teen accused of turkey hanging
Wire Services | Submitted by: wingnut
"A Charlestown teenager faces animal cruelty charges after allegedly stealing a neighbor's turkey and dangling it from an Interstate 95 overpass until a passing car hit and killed it. The ghoulish episode was recorded by one of the friends of Peter Reynolds. Police also charge Reynolds with badly hurting a cat. In that incident in August, he's accused of smashing the feline's head on his driveway and stuffing it while it was unconscious into a mailbox."

IBM Flushes Restroom Patent
c|Net | Submitted by: Dustin Mahatov
Big Blue's attempt to move closer to the days of Big Brother, by way of patenting a method of monitoring and scheduling bathroom breaks, has been "dumped" after a protest was filed. Men around the globe are disappointed, as women will continue to control this area vital aspect of daily living.

Stripping naked not effective defense tactic
Dayton Daily News | Submitted by: Idle Hands
At least for one guy: "An appeals court has ruled that a man barred from his own trial when he took off his clothes and refused to get dressed will not get a new trial. The naked defendant, convicted of a dozen charges stemming from a 1999 stolen car chase in Hamilton, was sentenced to seven years in prison... Barring him was 'proper' under the circumstances, the judges said."

The ugly truth about current Conservatism
Liberty for All | Submitted by: Macki
This article is aimed at the Republic Party, but it's equally the fault of the Democrats for allowing this to happen. Democrats the like of Dianne Feinstein are every bit as evil, if not more, than the current Administration: "The New York Times published an article suggesting that the Feds have built concentration camps within the United States... there was no real denial from the Executive Branch... The only reason you are reading this article here is because they haven't started censoring political dissent on the Internet... yet. There are many evils that have not been implemented to date, but the mechanical apparatus of totalitarianism is completely in place, oiled, idling, and ready for use, thanks to the War On Terror."

Mormon Church disrupted by free speech
Salt Lake Tribune | Submitted by: Goopie
"Wearing a T-shirt with "Know Your Bible" on the front and "Trust Jesus" in back, Lonnie Pursifull yelled at pedestrians. "Joseph Smith didn't die for your sins. Brigham Young didn't die for your sins. Jesus died for your sins... Lavon Christensen, who went to the downtown temple to celebrate her 45th wedding anniversary, shouted back: "You're here because you hate Mormons."

Papers, Please
Lew Rockwell | Submitted by: sheik yarbuti
A rant. "One of the aftereffects of 9-11 has been the return with a vengeance of efforts to give every U.S. citizen a de facto national ID card. The latest effort is H.R. 4633, introduced into Congress last May by Jim Moran and Tom Davis, both of Virginia. The bill establishes two other requirements, that the ID card "accept data or software written to the license or card by non-governmental devices if the data transfer is authorized by the holder of the license or card;" and, here is another real kicker, the card must "conform to any other standards issued by the Secretary."

Irish Travelers: white trash or amazingly cool?
MSNBC | Submitted by: Son of Benway
"They traced the car to a small brick house just outside Fort Worth, Texas. That’s when it became clear this was no ordinary investigation. Records show not just one car, but hundreds of vehicles listed at this address. Ford Explorers, Buick Rivieras, Mercedes, BMWs and pick up trucks. There were 65 pickup trucks, enough to open a used car lot. They found not only the Toogoods, but the Burkes, the Carols, the Daleys, Gallaghers, Gormans, Jennings, McDonalds, McNalleys, Reillys all apparently living right here."

Foundling found in Russia
Pravda | Submitted by: Col. Klink
It seems that every day Pravda is going off the deep end. What would we do without this fine Soviet institution? "Archaeologists are puzzled who is the foundling: an extraterrestrial or just a retarded child. Specialists of Anthropology Institute are sceptical about the case of the extraterrestrial. The chief of anthropology reconstruction laboratory, Tatyana Balueva said that Alesha might be a very small, probably, not born child. "The creature’s arms and legs look like human extremities, while its skull is not completely formed. It could be a sick child, having a serious pathology. It is most likely a human being."

Mediocrity rules
Edmonton Journal | Submitted by: Gorg
"University of Alberta professor Doug Aoki thinks you are unattractive. Well, maybe not you, specifically. But most of us. Despite that, most of us live under the illusion that we are good looking, or not bad looking. Average looking at the very least, says Aoki, a psychoanalyst of culture in the university's sociology department."
