UFO's buzz Washington D.C.
Washington Post | Submitted by: ian m.
"'It was this object, this light-blue object, traveling at a phenomenal rate of speed,' Rogers said... Military officials confirm that two F-16 jets from Andrews Air Force Base were scrambled early yesterday after radar detected an unknown aircraft in area airspace... [T]hey do not know just what the jets were chasing, because whatever it was disappeared. "There are any number of scenarios, but we don't know what it was," said Maj. Barry Venable... When the F-16s carrying air-to-air missiles were launched from Andrews, the unidentified aircraft's track faded from the radar, the military official said, speaking on condition of anonymity."

God save the... oops
BBC | Submitted by: Ann Onymous
"The Radio Authority has upheld a complaint against Virgin Radio for following a news item on the Queen Mother's death with the Sex Pistols' hit God Save The Queen. It was aired on a show in April, shortly after a report on how the Queen was planning to deliver a eulogy about her late mother, who died on 31 March." British censorship apparently mandates good taste.

Wire Services | Submitted by: Mrs. C.
A paramilitary training program in Alabama may have enrolled hostile foreigners? No way could that ever happen in this country. "Its owners, believed by authorities to be the militants' unwitting accomplices, offered training in automatic weapons, urban warfare and martial arts to fight guerrilla attacks."

Melbourne Herald Sun | Submitted by: Vesney
"The [Victoria, Australia] State Government is expecting to pay about AU$220,000 to set up a six-bedroom house in St Kilda for the sex worker centre proposed in the Attorney-General's street prostitution report, released last month... The Government maintains it will be able to recoup most of the running costs from fees paid by sex workers' clients for hire of the rooms."

For Unlawful Canine Knowledge
Bloomington Pantagraph | Submitted by: Gutter Juice
Back in the 1970's, when the Illinois Penal Code was rewritten, someone forgot to criminalize bestiality, tee hee. The governor has just now got around to signing the law to make this illegal again. Now, "sexual conduct or sexual contact with an animal can bring a penalty of up to three years in prison. Prison terms could be longer if the deed results in serious injury or death to the animal or is done in front of a minor."

St. Petersburg Times | Submitted by: Toots
"Hircock was among a team of emergency workers who had to trudge through a house filled with trash, feces, insects and abandoned pets at the Arbors neighborhood in the Meadow Pointe community. He described trash and waste piled throughout the house to window sill level. Nearby, a 5-foot-deep stack of trash bags, bicycles and old tires filled the three-car garage."

Giant squid washes ashore In Tasmania
National Geographic | Submitted by: portalnet
The giant squid, an adult female, bore the marks of a torrid sexual affair. Sucker marks decorated her neck, and the top of her head bore a nip, possibly from a male's beak. Sperm samples suggest that she may have mated nearby... Though her longest tentacles have been lost, estimates based on her remaining arms suggest she would have been around 50 feet—a little larger than the average giant squid, Architeuthis dux, found to date."

Catholic church whitens up saint
Suburban Chicago News | Submitted by: Gutter Juice
"Juan Diego, expected to become the Roman Catholic church's first Indian saint next week, doesn't look much like an Indian these days. The church has replaced traditional renderings of the 16th century figure in which he is depicted as a sparsely whiskered, dark-skinned Indian with a new version showing him with a full-beard and light skin. The image is causing an uproar in Mexico, where many people feel their Indian heritage is being insulted."
