BBC | Submitted by: Soylent
A Brookings Institution report "suggests that a nuclear device exploded in a major US city would kill 100,000 people - but that a million could die if large areas were exposed to lethal bacteria and viruses. When Pettyjohn was asked for a motive, he replied, "Pure pleasure," deputies said."

"A Mississauga family has been hit with a $26,000 hydro bill because their former tenants stole electricity to power an illegal marijuana lab... Hangdog, Spanish style
BBC | Submitted by: Ann Onymous
"The World Society for the Protection of Animals says tens of thousands of Spanish racing dogs, known as galgos, are hanged every year following the end of the hunting season...According to the charity, dogs that did badly in the hunting season were hanged with a low noose. The practice was known as the "piano player" because the dogs would frantically scrabble their legs in an effort to reach the ground. Dogs which had hunted well were given a faster death by being hanged higher up."

The American eugenics program
Kansas City Star | Submitted by: Soylent
"The sign will explain how in 1924, Virginia passed a law that today would seem unthinkable. The Virginia Statute for Eugenical Sterilization allowed the state to forcibly sterilize persons whose future children, it was believed, would be "genetically inferior"... Writing for the 8-to-1 [Supreme Court] majority, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. penned the following: "It is better for all the world, if instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crimes, or to let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit for continuing their kind....Three generations of imbeciles are enough."
