Bin Laden doll outsells Tony Blair toy
Guardian | Submitted by: Ann Onymous
"An action man-style doll of Tony Blair is being dramatically outsold by the Osama bin Laden figure, it emerged today. The plastic prime minister, complete with fixed grin, ruffled hair and dressed in an army uniform, has not sold a single model in its first six weeks on offer. By contrast, sales of the Bin Laden doll on US-based internet site, Herobuilders.com, are already approaching 5,000."

Cincinnati Enquirer | Submitted by: uucp
"One of the images showed the hands of a 2-year-old boy wrapped with plastic. In another, a man's body was posed with an apple, while another showed a woman with a key between her lips." The judge took time to call the project "idiotic" before sentence was pronounced.

Salon | Submitted by: uucp
"The family of a 15-year-old boy who crashed a stolen plane into a Tampa highrise is suing the maker of the acne drug Accutane for $70 million, accusing the medicine of prompting her son's suicide." Al Bawaba | Submitted by: Paratact
Ever had "Mughlai"-style food in an Indian restaurant? Apparently, Osama digs the Afghan version ("Mogul") of a lamb preparation of the dish. Also, the chef provides some description of beleagured Osama's activities during the start of the American air raids and speculates on his current whereabouts.

Another red heifer
National Review | Submitted by: Soylent
"As it turned out, during the three years of waiting for [a previous red] heifer to reach the ritually mandated age of sacrifice, white hairs popped out on the tip of her tail. This bovine was, alas, not divine. But now there's a successor, and rabbis who have examined her have declared her ritually acceptable (though she will not be ready for sacrifice for three years)." Armageddon will come quickly!

Federal surveillance is exploding
Newhouse News Service | Submitted by: Soylent
Frighteningly, and with little notice from the press, the U.S. Government is massively increasing its surveillance on the citizenry: "The amount of subpoenas that carriers receive today is roughly doubling every month -- we're talking about hundreds of thousands of subpoenas for customer records -- stuff that used to require a judge's approval," said Albert Gidari, a Seattle-based expert in privacy and security law who represents numerous technology companies."

Dead Peasant policies
Houston Chronicle | Submitted by: Soylent
Walmart and other companies are buying so-called "Dead Peasant" insurance policies for their Texas employees, in violation of state law. They don't tell the employees they are doing this, and silently collect the benefits should anyone kick the bucket. Very thoughtful.

Texas Bandsaw Massacre
Guardian | Submitted by: Ogrish
"An American living in Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire, was yesterday accused of having shot dead two Mormon missionaries and dismembered their bodies with a mechanical band saw... [Defendant] Kleasen's trailer was behind a taxidermy, where he worked as a cleaner and had keys to the shop, said [Prosecutor] Lewis. Mr Darley's hair was found on a band or mechanical saw in the shop: "It is the prosecution's allegation that the band saw was used to cut up the bodies."
