On the first full day this page went live, 100,000 people visited this Rotten News page. Of course that was the day after the WTC attacks, so that number is somewhat distorted. Right now this page gets between 50,000 and 75,000 people every day.

We encourage everyone to link to this page; if you like it, others probably will as well.

Mother fed baby to pet rats
Sun | Submitted by: anonymous
"A cruel mum tortured her baby by forcing her pet rats to EAT him. The tot was left in agony as the rodents were held to his face and hands then tormented into gnawing his flesh. Horrified doctors found the 14-month-old covered in crescent-shaped bite marks, a court heard."

Colombine photos leaked
Rocky Mountain News | Submitted by: Rocket Man
"Dozens of top secret, crime-scene photos from the Columbine High School massacre, showing the two killers' bodies, their victims and even their bombs, have leaked out. Families of some victims are outraged, and said that the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has failed to keep a promise that the photos would never leave that office... somehow, the most graphic of the crime-scene documents have become public, and he believes the photos came from that office." [No, Rotten has not received copies of these yet, however it is only a matter of time...]

Blasphemous rumors might be criminal
Observer | Submitted by: Soylent
Joan Bakewell might be charged in the UK for blasphemy, for portions of the poem which she read on the BBC. The poem, The Love That Dares To Speak Its Name, deals with Jesus' Final Ejaculation (see second link). "I couldn't believe what was being said on my TV set. It is unthinkable that the BBC should have repeated part of a poem already found by a jury to be a blasphemous libel." Bet you never realized Judas was a great kisser.

"The 12-page complaint, filed by Ron Arnold, executive vice president of the nonprofit Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise (CDFE), argues that the Norfolk-based animal rights group should be stripped of its charitable status. The complaint says PETA supports domestic terrorist groups, steals trade secrets and assaults business executives."

Barney parodies under fire
Newsbytes | Submitted by: Soylent
The EFF may challenge PBS's contention that parody of Barney is not protected speech: "Stuart Frankel's site depicts Barney as a demon-eyed, yak-horned purple beast bearing Satanic symbols on his chest. It refers to Barney, in quasi biblical terms, as "The Enemy." ... "The Enemy is concerned with selling itself," the site says. "It has turned PBS into a Merchandise Mart, and cleverly insinuated its cheesy products into the most treacly Web sites."

Ashcroft possibly insane
Guardian | Submitted by: Soylent
"Mr Ashcroft, a devout Christian and a grittily determined singer, went public with one of his works last month, when he surprised an audience at a North Carolina seminary with a rendition of Let the Eagle Soar, a tribute to America's virtues, which continues: "Like she's never soared before, from rocky coast to golden shore, let the mighty eagle soar," and so on for four minutes. The performance was accompanied only by taped music, but Mr Ashcroft's staff are complaining that printed versions of the song are being distributed at meetings so that they will be able to join in. When asked why she opposed the workplace singalong, one of the department's lawyers said: "Have you heard the song? It really sucks."
